My son and I love trains and especially the Acela on @amtrak so we went to Philly for some museums for the weekend. About this time of year in 1947 the original Freedom Train was making its rounds through America as a mobile National Archives. Standing astride the world as the only power not ravaged by WW2, much had still been asked of Americans and the Freedom Train was a patriotic effort to reintroduce people to our collective heritage. It contained the Magna Carta, Jefferson’s draft of the Declaration of Independence, Washington’s notes on the Constitution, the Gettysburg Address, the Emancipation Proclamation, and the flag that had flown on the U.S.S. Missouri the day of the Japanese surrender. All of this was presented under glass and guarded by a special detachment of United States Marines who shepherded as many as 1,200 people per hour through the exhibit as it made stops across the nation. The final image is the second (‘75-76) Freedom Train from our bicentennial. Maybe it’s time we do this again?

You know you are loved when someone braves 16 degree weather and then 4 flights of stairs just to bring you morning coffee. P.S. This guest house was once a single family residence built in the 1860s?? (Let me check the year). Converted to a 19 room hotel in 1975. You do have a shared bathroom on floors... But do you understand plumbing and a historical residence? From what I can tell, ghost free!! But oh the fireplaces, woodwork, charm, beautiful touches and... Location, location, location. 💙💙💙 #bostontourist #boston #airbnbhomes #history #traveler #seetheusa #americanhistory #fenwaypark #backbay

We are so blessed to live in a country where we can go to our President’s house and wander around. For free. Living just outside of DC there is so much history available for us to absorb. Today was a great day. @lxv.eq

No one does tea like Daughters of the American Revolution. How honored I am to be asked to give my presentation on How Thanksgiving became a National Holiday to them. Here are just a few of the beautiful fall table settings I’ve seen this month. Four more presentations before I sit down to my own turkey dinner. On November 17, 1558, Elizabeth I is crowned Queen of England. She creates an English identity that transcends religion, begins exploring North America, and fights Spain to a standstill. She stays on the throne until 1603 and becomes minority owner of the Philadelphia Eagles. One of those facts is false. Just saw @nctheatre 's production of Having Our Say | The Delany Sisters' First 100 Years and appreciate how much detail was put into bringing their real story to life. From the intimate portraits, to the smells of real food cooking in the kitchen, the actors made the audience feel like we were right there in the living room having a conversation with those amazing trailblazing sisters who were proud Americans and Survivors! Enjoyed seeing art and history come together with #ncthavingoursay ! 💕 ------------ There are 3 SHOWS left and still a chance to see this amazing play! “Split like fish to be broiled”⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ Fort Mifflin, located on Mud Island in the Delaware River, was captured by the British #onthisday in 1777. ⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ The British capture of Fort Mifflin followed a siege that began shortly after Sir William Howe's British troops occupied Philadelphia. Howe felt securing Fort Mifflin, located near the current-day Philadelphia International Airport, would help the British supply the occupied city of Philadelphia via the Delaware River.⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ Joseph Plumb Martin fought for the Continental Army at the Siege of Fort Mifflin. Martin described the battle in gruesome detail in his Memoir of a Revolutionary Soldier, writing that men were "split like fish to be broiled" and "cut up like cornstalks" by British artillery fire. Martin also described how deep the mud was during battle, writing, "I have seen the enemy's shells fall upon it and sink so low that their report could not be heard when they burst, and I could only feel the tremulous motion of the earth at the time."⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ #howrevolutionary #americanrevolution #amrev #revolutionarywar #revwar #americanhistory #historymuseum #ushistory #tdih #thisdayinhistory

Finished our current read aloud while my daughter baked these lovely pumpkin cupcakes. 🍁🍁🍁 Susannah Endicott loved the Long Island farm in Hempstead Parish, where she had lived all her life, and her parents’ decision to send her to New York for the winter of 1683 so that she might attend a good school and learn to “comport herself as a young lady” was bitter news. Even though she would live with uncle Ben, aunt Martha, and cousin Lucetta and there would be much more gaiety than she was used to in the country, Susannah still did not want to leave her home. But Father’s mind was made up, and when Susannah’s clothes were in readiness, they set off for the city in the four-wheeled wagon drawn by the team of red oxen. Although lonely and homesick at first, Susannah slowly made friends. There was Nicole, a bound girl from Holland who lived with an old Dutch couple next door, and Richard Page who attended the same school. It was fun to skate on Collect Pond with a crowd of school friends when the cold weather came. There were parties to which Susannah was invited, and with the help of her cousin, she soon learned the latest dances. A St. Nicholas Day supper at her Dutch neighbors’ made Susannah feel quite a young lady. Best of all, however, was helping Nicole to find her brother, who had gone to sea as a young boy and an of whom there had been no news for some time. This third book about the Endicott family is told with the same skill and sensitivity, and in Susannah Miss Daringer offers a new friend to the many girls who will read the book with great pleasure. It is and absorbing story, filled with gaiety, good times, and warmly drawn characters - all enriched by a living sense of an earlier period in American history. 🍁🍁🍁🍁 “Men ought to learn to live in peace together, not fight things out as though they were devoid of common sense and reason. In fact, progress had been so favorable that it was more than likely that both the governors and their advisers would soon journey up the river to Fort Albany to meet with the Iroquois sachems. The Iroquois were a valorous tribe and it would be to the interests of the province to hold their friendship.“ pg. 257
