Is your hamster’s wheel is too small? 🐹⠀⠀⠀⠀ A hamster’s wheel needs to allow them to run as if they were on a flat surface. Wheels that are too small cause their back to arch/bend and damages their spines. I’ve noticed that most examples of back arching are of hamsters in very small wheels and the arching is extreme. There’s seems to still be confusion about wheels that cause a less obvious arch, as well as how to properly size your hamster’s wheel.⠀ ⠀⠀ Gertie kindly offered to demonstrate* why the 9 inch Silent Runner is never appropriate for a Syrian hamster (@exoticnutrition We love your wheels, but please stop advertising that 9 inch wheels are okay for Syrians). ⠀⠀ In the first video, she is in the 9 inch wheel, and the arch in her back is not as noticeable as it would be in a 6 inch wheel. However, you can see that she isn’t walking on a flat surface, her head is bending up and she’s walking upward. The arch of her back more subtle, but the wheel is still too small, uncomfortable, and will cause injury and pain with long term use.⠀⠀ The next two videos show Gertie running at full speed on her 12inch Silent Runner. Notice how her body is straight, it looks like she’s running on a flat surface. That’s how you know the 12 inch wheel is the right size for her! ⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ I follow a simple guideline to properly size my hamster’s wheels. I measure the length of their body, multiply that measurement by two, and add two inches.⠀⠀ For example, Gertie is 5 inches long. 5 x 2 = 10. Add two inches, 10 + 2 = 12. Therefore, Gertie needs a 12 inch wheel! ⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ Based on that guideline, breed specific sizes are typically:⠀⠀ - Syrians: 11 - 12 inch, but it’s not uncommon for them to need 13 inches and bigger! ⠀⠀ - Chinese 10 - 12 inch⠀⠀ - WW, RC, and hybrid dwarfs: 8 - 10 inch⠀⠀ - Roborovski 6.5 - 8 inch⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ It’s so important to make sure your hamster can run comfortably and safely in their wheel. When in doubt, use a bigger wheel!⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ *Gertie was on this wheel for less than 30 seconds. It belongs to my dwarf hamster, Deet, and was thoroughly washed before and after Gertie used it 😊⠀

Today's post will be an updated cage post!! I'm going to make this post just like my other cage posts so let's just get into it :) This is Autumn's natrual/German inspired themed cage! It is the Ikea Detolf which has around 950 square inches :) Starting with the substrates, on the far left side Autumn has 2-3 inches of sifted children's play sand from @homedepot . In the middle there is 6-8 inches of Grreat Choice Aspen bedding from @petsmart . On the far right is 11-12 inches of kaytee clean and cozy from @petco . Now moving on to the toys!! Starting on the far left again, there is Autumn's 12 inche silent runner from @exoticnutrition . In front of the wheel is a Willow tunnel from @petsmart . To the right of the wheel is Autumn's Living World Glass waterbottle from @amazon with a sanitized rock underneath. Blocking off the sand from the Aspen bedding is a long bendy bridge from @amazon . Onto the Aspen bedding, there is a large piece of grapevine from @petco as well as a cork tunnel from @petco . In front of the cork tunnel is a seagrass tunnel (one of Autumn's favorites 😆) from @viovet . On the kaytee clean and cozy, there is a half buried bendy bridge from @petco . Throughout the cage there is sanitized apple tree branches, oxbow orchard grass hay, herbs, oat and millet sprays, and chew toys from @petco and @viovet . Jesus finally answered the prayer. I’ve been so frustrated with the process of the hamster wheel. It feels like we all do the same things expecting different results. The whole world, insane.
