I am obsessed with this gorgeous wee pīwakawaka! Leucism is a partial loss of pigmentation which makes this little sweetheart white instead of brown. It’s not very common, but occasionally these little oddities pop up. In the past I’ve come across leucistic korimako (bellbirds), toanui (flesh-footed shearwaters) and kōkako, and I’ve seen photos of leucistic Black swans, oystercatchers and tūī! Spend enough time with birds, and you begin to notice these little curiosities. My humans forgot to mention my grandparents have a POOL!!! 🙄😒😠🥴😱 I was very brave and took a small (assisted) swim...but let’s not do this again for a long while...okay?! 😍🥰😍 This weekend also marks one year since I came to live with my forever family💓💓💓 I had an amazing weekend (minus the swim) and felt so much love from my Moms, my Grandparents, and my best friend @winnythemaltipoo. I hope everyone had a wonderful weekend - sending out lots of love to you all💝 #puglet #adoptaversary #puggylove

Did you ever see a #WhitePeacock ? Well, find this along with his other friends of various colors at #FlamingoGardens which is west of #FortLauderdaleFlorida. White #peacocks are not #albino animals. White #peafowl have blue eyes and colored skin. #Leucism is a genetic mutation that causes loss of pigmentation. White #Peacocks are not found in the wild because the whiteness makes them more visible to #predators. Enjoy your Sunday.

orcaspotlight. Our post for today is the very well-known little pale gray calf, T46B1

Our post for today is the very well-known little pale gray calf, T46B1B Tl'uk! - T46B1B Tl'uk (b. 2018) is the second known calf born to young adult female T46B1 Tread (b. 2003). T46B1's other calf is T46B1A Tsakani (b. 2015). T46B1B's grandmother is T46B Raksha (b. 1988) and through her, T46B1B has four aunts T46B2 Akela (b. 2008), T46B3 (b. 2011), T46B4 (b. 2013), and T46B6 (b.  2019) and one aunt/uncle (gender unknown) T46B5* (2016-2016). T46B1B's great-grandmother is T46 Wake (b. 1966) and through her, T46B1B has two great-aunts T46A/T122 (b. 1982) and T46C (b. 1994), one possible great-aunt T123 Sidney (b. 1985), and three great-uncles T46D (b. 2000), T46E (b. 2003), and T46F (b. 2012). T46B1B is also distantly related to T46C's calves T46C1 (b. 2006), T46C2 (b. 2009), T46C3 (b. 2013), and T46C4 (b. 2018), and to T123's calves T123A Stanley (b. 2000), T123B Thrasher* (2009-2011), T123C Lucky (b. 2012), and T123D Darcy (b. 2018) - At a little less than a year old, T46B1B is still nursing from mom but is likely attempting to eat bits of meat given to him from family members. Calves primarily nurse from 1-2 years old but a longer period of nursing from ages 2-3 years may be necessarily to perfect sophisticated hunting behaviors - T46B1B is one of the most popular transient orcas at the moment due to his unusual light coloration. Interestingly, he appeared to have relatively normal pigmentation when first sighted late last year although this may be attributed to different lighting conditions. There are a number of possibilities as to why he appears to be white. The most harmless ones are Albinism and Leucism (with Leucism being the more likely of the two given his appearance of only partial pigment loss and that he lacks the characteristic red eyes) which both mainly affect pigment cells in the body. Chediak-Higashi syndrome is the diagnosis that everyone is dreading. (CONTINUED IN THE COMMENTS!)

Another magical leucistic Red Kite; this time an unmarked individual. Leucism is a genetic condition where the animal has a lack a pigmentation (usually melanin) causing the animal to be much paler than normal. However, unlike albinism, the pigment loss is only in the fur and feathers of the animal (whereas albino animals also lack pigment in the eyes; often causing them to be red in colour). 🐥Red Kite- Milvus milvus🐥 #wildlife #wildlifephotography #wildbird #redkite #gigrinfarm #kite #leucisticbird #leucism #bird #birdofprey #nature

Artist Hamish Foote has become fascinated by a gene process known as leucism, where a recessive gene in both parents can throw up a completely white offspring - this is not to be confused with albinism. As the gene pool shrinks leucism increases. His research into this has led to his jewel-like works, painted in egg tempera on gessoed kauri panels. White kiwis take front of stage, both by night and by day and behind them mystical bays and headlands and moonlight landscapes drawing us further into the pictures. You van view his paintings in ARTIS Gallery right now in 'Psalm' an exhibition of new works from Bronwynne Cornish and Hamish Foote.

#NaotoHakushoku He went to school with Shiki and was one year above him. They knew each other since middle school where they became friends and did all sorts of nerdy things together before falling in love and becoming a couple. They usually went to library together, picking books to read and then go home and just lie by each other reading. Naoto helped Shiki coping with the death of his father and took care of him when he was in the hospital after getting attacked with a knife. They were together way after graduation until Naoto died of leukemia. Before that, he fought cancer for several years with Shiki sticking by his side until the very end. Naoto is a softhearted soul that gave Shiki a bit of hope in humanity again, but that last hope died along with Naoto. Height: 1,55m/5'1" Birthday: 07.03. nikharley. Different but still beautiful - here are two ducklings that are siblin

Different but still beautiful - here are two ducklings that are siblings. They are both one week old yet look quite different. The duckling on the left is leucistic whereas the one on the right is not. Leucism is an umbrella term for a number of conditions that cause a lack of melanin. It can be difficult to tell which specific condition an animal has, whilst still being classed as leucistic. Leucism differs from albinism in that the animal still has some melanin and therefore can have some colouration, such as a "faded" appearance. Leucistic animals usually have dark eyes whereas albinos have pink. Carotenoid pigments are unaffected by leucism and so if the animal's colouration uses these pigments, those areas will be unaffected. For birds, leucism can cause weak feathers which can hinder flight. These birds are therefore more prone to predation if they are not only more conspicuous, but also less able to fly away from danger. They may also struggle to find a partner. This particular bird is a white faced whistling duck. | #Leucism #Leucistic #Leucisticbird #WhiteFacedTreeDuck #WhiteFacedWhistlingDuck #Dendrocygna #viduata #Dendrocygnaviduata #LeucisticDuck #LeucisticWhistlingDuck #LeucisticWhiteFacedWhistlingDuck #LeucisticWhiteFacedTreeDuck #Duck #ducklings #aviculture #newlife #WhistlingDuck #IUCN #leastconcern #WFWD #WFTD
