Grounding exercises aim to engage our senses to help calm the body and quiet the mind by bringing awareness to the present moment. There are all different types of grounding techniques too whether they be physical (stretching, deep breathing), soothing (listening to music, affirmations), or mental (count by 7’s, reciting or visualizing something). It’s helpful to try out a few since everyone has their own preferences and what will work best for them. A great physical grounding technique is progressive muscle relaxation. A whole body series can take up to 10 minutes, so feel free to tailor the exercise for your particular needs. Start by getting your body into a comfortable position. Then beginning with the top of our body contract one set of muscle groups (try your jaw), while inhaling for count of 5-10. Bring awareness to this muscle area as you release and exhale for 5-10 seconds. Gradually work down through each muscle group in your body, contracting and relaxing (shoulders, fists, stomach, thighs, etc.). Whenever you create tension in a muscle and then intentionally release the tension, the muscle has to relax from a physiological standpoint. When muscles are relaxed, they require less oxygen which means our breathing pattern slows and deepens. Our heart rate in turn slows down, and we can become more calm and refreshed. Remember with any new skill, it takes time and practice! If this exercise isn’t for you, that’s okay too. I have this belief that when things seem to be held up or aren’t happening the way you want or when life throws you a curve ball, that there’s something better on the way. ✨ Looking back, all the hardships and rock bottoms I have experienced have brought forth the greatest blessings and pivotal times in my life. They forced me to shift my life and to change within. I see those experiences as divine guidance from the Universe...and sometimes a kick in the ass when I was letting my ego run my life. ✨ Life is throwing me some major curve balls right now. It’s like 2019 is kicking and screaming on its way out. But I know I’m not the only one going through tricky times and I know there’s a rainbow at the end of all this.
