Last week, we discussed the two heatwaves that hit Europe this summer, and how they might impact the glaciers in the Alps. The impact will be strong, especially if these phenomena keep being repeated. This summer’s heatwave also impacted the Greenland Ice Sheet, causing extensive surface melt and creating what we call melt ponds on the surface. We can define melt ponds as pools of water on the surface resulting from nearby snow and ice melt. These melt ponds are common during the summer in Greenland, but the area they cover is increasing with time, especially with the recurrent heatwaves hitting the ice sheet. The National Snow and Ice Data Centre found that approximately 90% of the surface area of the #Greenland Ice Sheet experienced surface melt between 30th July and 3rd August 2019. This melt event resulted in the loss of 55 billion tons of water, equivalent to 18,000,000 Olympic swimming pools. The MAR model (a regional climate model) simulated the same amount of melt, giving us good confidence in these observations. As you can see in the images from NASA ice on twitter, melt ponds are darker than the ice/snow surrounding them. These pools have a lower albedo than the surface of the ice sheet and therefore absorb more energy, which will accelerate the melt at the surface (this is what we call a positive feedback). Some of the melt ponds can reach up to 10 m depth below the surface, as seen by #ICESat2. This summer Europe has basked in two heatwaves, breaking temperature records in France, Germany, Belgium and the Netherlands. This was bad news for the glaciers of the Alps. Glaciers in Switzerland were estimated to have lost 800 million tons of snow and ice in just 14 days. In the French Alps a meltwater lake formed at an altitude of 3,500 metres on Mont Blanc. A recent study has suggested that around 50% of glacier volume in the Alps will be lost by 2050, regardless of greenhouse gas emissions. Emissions in the coming decades will determine the fate of the remaining half. The photos show Morteratsch Glacier in the Swiss Alps near St. Moritz in 2010. The second photo shows how far the glacier tongue retreated between 1900 and 1970 and how far it had retreated in the 40 years since 1970. Photos: Ashley Morris References: Matthais Huss, Twitter; H. npiglaciology. Glaciology 101. What measurements do we make in the field to estimate

Glaciology 101. What measurements do we make in the field to estimate the mass balance of a glacier? Snow pit analysis and stake measurement are some of the most fundamental techniques in field glaciology. In snow pits we can measure the snow depth, stratigraphy, temperature, and density. We can also drill a series of stakes into the ice along the glacier and revisit them year-on-year. We can use GPS to measure how much and in which direction the glacier has moved since the last visit, and hence calculate the flow velocity in the vicinity. By repeatedly measuring the distance from the top of the stake to the ice surface we can measure the amount of ice gained or lost. If these measurements are performed across the altitudinal range of the glacier, or are spread sufficiently across an ice cap, we can estimate the mass balance. In addition, we can mount instruments to mass balance stakes to collect other measurements. It’s a hard life being a mass balance stake though, and the formation of rime ice can cause them to bend, necessitating regular maintenance. npiglaciology. Summer in the Arctic! Marine-terminating glacier fronts are important

Summer in the Arctic! Marine-terminating glacier fronts are important feeding areas for birds this time of the year. Can you see what bird species is sitting on the iceberg? The bird is called blacklegged kittiwake, and the name was derived from its call, a shrill 'kittee-wa-aaake, kitte-wa-aaake'. You can easily identify it from its black legs. Kittiwakes are kalled krykkje in Norwegian. The Latin genus name Rissa comes from Icelandic, where the birds are called Rita, and the specific Tridactyla is from Ancient Greek, which means "three-toed". The back toe of the bird is so small, that it looks like it only has three toes. Kittiwakes live in colonies in the Arctic, often on steep mountain slopes. In Tromsø, where we have our office, kittiwakes are nesting on the buildings in town. They feed on small fish and shrimp, which at tidewater-glacier fronts are brought to the surface by upwelling meltwater plumes. The species is one of the most numerous seabirds, although recent surveys show that their population is decreasing rapidly. Therefore, the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) has listed the kittiwakes as vulnerable. While parts of Central Europe have suffered from record heat lately, Tromsø and Northern Norway have "enjoyed" some cool weather with a fresh blanket of snow in the mountains. What's better then, than to do some late season skiing in our backyard mountains, the Lyngen Alps. Bushwacking and river crossings in the valley get easily forgotten when you reach the snow and get up to a scenery like this. Jiehkkevarri, the highest mountain in the region (1834 m), is seen in the background with its summit ice cap, one of about 80 glaciers in the Lyngen peninsula. At this time of the year, time is of no worry. This slope was skied down just before midnight - in bright sunshine. @NPIglaciology wishes you a great summer whether you spend it on the beach or on a glacier! In July 2017 I, Tommy and Anna Marie sat.marked a female arctic fox (blue color morph) in Svalbard for @fuglei and @norskpolarinstitutt (NPI). The newly published article from the researchers at NPI show a tremendous "walk" from Svalbard, around Nordaustlandet, via Greenland and ending in Canada. Probably and hopefully she started her new life there. We are very found of the foxes and this finding is really, really interesting and make the fox even more exciting to investigate 😊❤️! You can read about the fox or the article several places online.

FJELLREV I SOMMERDRAKT. #fjellrev #polarrev # #polarfox #svalbard #fjellrevsvalbard #sommerdrakt #sommerpels #arcticanimal #animalsvalbard #tundra #norskpolarinstitutt #norwegianpolarinstitute
