#wittywednesdays is brought to you by François-Marie Arouet (1694 - 1778), known by his pen name, Voltaire. A French Enlightenment writer, historian, and philosopher, Voltaire was famous for his critical wit, polemics against Christianity, and advocacy of free speech, religious freedom and the separation of church and state. Often at odds with French authorities over his controversial works (many of which were banned), he was twice imprisoned in the Bastille and spent time exiled in England. Although works such as his Treatise on Tolerance are not widely known today, Voltaire's thinking has been widely admired and influential for prominent literary and political figures such as Rousseau, Mary Wollstonecraft, Byron, Shelley and George Orwell. A courageous crusader against tyranny and bigotry, his ideas continue to be relevant today, particularly in light of pressing conversations around free speech and religious intolerance. Choosing from a vast sea of his quotes, all brimming with profound humanity and wisdom, was very difficult so here's two: the first is the wonderfully pithy, "common sense is not so common", and the second is a sentiment that rings particularly true in today's argumentative political climate: "Opinion has caused more trouble on this little earth than plagues or earthquakes." . . . #wittywednesdays #Voltaire #Enlightenment #polemicist #tolerance #religion #politics #controversial #freespeech

Half an hour later, dressed in a pair of corduroy trousers and and a heavy sweater, Albert made his way down to the river. Although it was January, the morning was warm. Very little wind, blue sky and intermittently sunny as the white clouds moved slowly across the sky. Normally when walking with his dog he would cross the footbridge and carry on walking to Fallowfield, but now, being alone, he decided on a longer route. He turned right and followed the path along the river bank. From my last novel. Without thinking of anything in particular he glanced at the flowing water, sparkling in the sunshine, the birds on the opposite bank and a small boat in the distance. Suddenly, something hit him hard on the back. He fell to the ground, face down. He realised almost at once that a man had attacked him. He automatically moved his elbows backwards and pushed his attacker over. He stood up. There were two of them. Although vicious looking and they moved fast, neither of them was very big. He made short shrift of the first one, who ran away and he pinned the other one down. ‘Who are you? Who do you work for?’ he asked. The reply was a barrage of insults and expletives, some of which he had not heard since he was in the army. ‘London, aren't you? That's why you have that foul mouth on you.’ Unrelenting, he glanced round to see if he had an audience. There was nobody else around. The man was wearing a sports jacket. He stuck his hand into the inside pocket and pulled out three passports. On the other side was a holster and an automatic.
