👀Tried iyengar yoga (not convinced)👀 ___
The yoga I practice and teach is one that feels good in my body. That’s not to say it feels for everyone. . 👣This week I practiced tapas - by trying something out of my comfort zone - iyengar. This style is slower than flow’s one breath per movement - and uses lots of props: belts, blocks, and blankets, as aids in performing the asanas. . ☝🏼Props: are meant to help get into postures and minimise risk of injury or strain. In shoulder stand, 3 stacked blankets under the neck. For headstand, 3 blankets under my mat. Honestly, neither posture felt good with props. I felt a strain in my neck during and after class. I totally understand the use of props during Yin yoga and sinking into them. However, for headstand it’s crucial to be fully engaged (neck long, shoulders, arms, core, back and legs engaged). On the floor, you have to engaged a lot more and push into your arms in order to take pressure off the head. If the head is resting on 3 blankets, you have the tendency to “let go” thereby increasing the risk for injury. . 🙃Same with practicing headstand against the wall - something I would never encourage my students to do. Relying on the wall will only make you afraid to go wall-less. And again less core work. . ✌🏼Breathing: It’s much easier to forget to breath during iyengar. Flow’s one breath per movement creates a moving meditation. The use of pranayma is quite therapeutic and I found this lacking duing iyengar. . Flow: 🤟🏼Ashtanga and vinyasa are much closer to gymnastics and martial arts where we only practice and rely on our body weight. If you can practice these types of yoga, I think they are more holistic, have less risk of injury, use more pranayama/breathing and work the muscles more. 👍🏼 I will give iyengar a few more tries also with different teachers - but my true love is the yoga I practice and teach.
