I listened to a @lewishowes podcast this week featuring @jockowillink a former Navy Seal that speaks a lot about the power of ownership can impact your life. When Lewis asked Jocko what he left held back most people in life Jocko said discipline. Many people set goals or want to do great things, but success in anything takes discipline. I don’t see myself as a super disciplined person. There are lots of times I will watch Netflix or nap instead of doing something productive. Yoga is one area of my life that I work hard at being disciplined, because I know it’s exactly what I put into my practice that I will get out of it. Do you agree that discipline is the key to a successful life? I believe there’s definitely something to be said about discipline, but what I believe is more important is dedication and purpose. According to the Mental Health Foundation’s latest UK study, undertaken last year, 74 per cent of us have felt overwhelmed and unable to cope; 46 per cent reported eating unhealthily or too much due to stress; 29 per cent reported starting or increasing their alcohol intake; and 16 per cent reported starting or increasing their smoking. Maureen Cronk, a London-based psychotherapist and specialist in addiction, also emphasises that yoga works better than most medication. Slow deep breathing has been proved to reduce anxiety and help with a range of illnesses and sleep problems by working with the nervous system and the mind. Nichola Foy, an English teacher in a central London school, attends the staff yoga class weekly. “It’s the beacon in our week, the one time we know that it will be calm and we can recalibrate and stretch and breathe.” More motivation to continue with daily practice of asana and meditation to help with the pressures of the external world we can't control. GODS OF YOGA ASANA CHALLENGE: Goddess Squat (Utkata Konasana) ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Utkata means "fierce" in Sanskrit, but we don't often call it the "fierce angle" pose (literal translation) in English--we call it Goddess pose, because it so closely resembles the fierce goddess Kali. In the photo, I'm adding Kali mudra as well, by pointing the pointer fingers. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Kali is the fierce demon-slaying manifestation of Shakti, the divine feminine. In one story, Shakti took on the manifestation of fierce Kali to rid the heavens of a scourge of demons. She slaughtered so many demons (even wearing their heads around her neck as a garland) that she eventually lost control and began slaughtering indiscriminately, and Shiva (her husband) had to come stop her. He laid down at her feet, and when she stepped on him (or in some versions, stabbed him), she snapped out of her shocked state, due to the remorse of harming her beloved husband. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Non-violence in yoga, right? Hehe, no one said the Hindu gods were infallible. This story reminds us of the strength, power, and yes, ferocity that we have inside of us--and it's also a cautionary tale to remember to control the fiercest of our emotions. The next teacher that we want to introduce is Amy! Amy is qualified medical doctor and did her yoga teacher training in Rishikesh, India (the birth place of yoga) with Guru Yogrishi Vishvketu at the Anand Prakash Ashram. Amy enjoys sequencing a balanced class with a healthy dose of asana that is nourishing for the body and suitable for the students in her class, with pranayama or breathing practice and with meditation and relaxation in either the yin or Hatha classes that she teaches. Amy also enjoys teaching mantra during longer classes where there is time to focus on sound work. Amy has a keen interest in the health benefits of poses and also for working with the stabilizer muscles of the body so as to prevent weakness and pain elsewhere. Amy’s yin classes are especially enjoyable as they blend relaxation with deep stretching of the fascia. Along with classes, Amy has also been behind the organizing of numerous events at the studio, including Soul Sundays- a blend of usually yoga, sound work and food as well as informative sessions but will also include other activities in the future, as well as her candlelit yin and cacao events.
